With this feasibility study our goal is to increase battery first life by 50%, increase the range of the pack and decrease the risk of thermal runway.
We're going to do this by integrating super-capacitors, state of the art power management systems and battery management algorithms with lithium ion-batteries, into a hybrid energy storage system, or what is known as a HESS.
Our mission of developing high performance electric drive trains
and high-performance energy storage systems fits with the Faraday Challenge message very closely.
The final product will be a battery that itself has a life expectancy that is well in excess of that which is needed, that can charge rapidly.
So now we are building a hybrid system which basically capitalises on our super-capacitor technology and allows us to harmonise that with existing energy storage techniques.
So hence our work is focussed on capacitor systems which are electrostatic storage of energy which can be transferred very rapidly.
The super-capacitor has the function of high power and the battery has a function of high energy density and the combination of that will mean that it can manage the different power consumptions
within the vehicle and then increase the life of the battery.
The problem is that the volume and size of capacitors is much larger than batteries.
So the mission is to reduce the volume and the mass of the super-capacitor.
If you could have a vehicle that drives much further,
it facilitates the more rapid take up of electric vehicles.
